The Role of Luck in Trading, Humility Without Despair

Luck plays a bigger role in short-term trading outcomes than most people like to admit. A single trade can win or lose for reasons unrelated to your skill. Over hundreds of trades, process matters more, but luck never disappears completely.

Why this matters:

- Winning streaks may reflect favorable conditions, not skill
- Losing streaks may be bad luck, not incompetence
- Overestimating skill leads to overconfidence and bigger risks
- Underestimating skill leads to abandoning a good system

How to handle luck wisely:

1. Use large samples. Judge yourself after many trades, not a few.

2. Separate process from outcome. Evaluate decisions, not just results.

3. Be humble in wins. Acknowledge that conditions helped.

4. Be kind in losses. Recognize that variance exists.

5. Control what you can. Risk, preparation, discipline, and review.

6. Keep risk small. It ensures bad luck doesn't end your journey.

7. Avoid stories that explain everything. The mind loves narratives, but randomness is often the real cause.

A helpful practice: after each month, ask, "How much of this result could be explained by luck, and how much by my process?" You may not get a precise answer, but the question builds humility.

Luck can't be controlled. Your response to it can.

Aim to be someone who remains steady whether luck is smiling or turning away.

A useful way to see luck in action: take your last 50 trades in random order and split them into five groups of ten. Some groups will look great, some terrible, from the exact same strategy. That's the variance you'll feel live, week to week. Do it two or three times with different random orders and the point really lands. A run of four losing weeks can happen with a perfectly decent edge. It also works the other way. A great month on a new method doesn't prove much. The useful response is to judge yourself on the things you control, rule following and sizing, and let the results catch up over a bigger sample.

What I take from it in practice: I don't touch a strategy after five losses and I don't size up after five wins. Either streak is well within what randomness alone produces. Decisions about the strategy wait for the monthly review. With a 50 percent win rate, the chance of five losses in a row starting at any given trade is about 3 percent, which means over a few hundred trades it will happen several times. Same for five wins. Writing that probability on the strategy page helps when a streak arrives. It reminds you the streak alone tells you almost nothing about the edge.
