How to Write a Trade Recap That Teaches Instead of Brags
A good trade recap shows your thinking, not just your result. It helps readers learn and keeps you honest. A bragging post gives only the profit screenshot.
A simple structure:
1. The context. Pair, timeframe, and the higher-timeframe bias.
2. The idea. What were you expecting, and why? Mention liquidity, structure, or zones.
3. The trigger. What confirmed the entry?
4. The risk. Stop placement, risk percentage, and reward-to-risk.
5. The management. What did you do after entering?
6. The result. In R, whether win or loss.
7. The lesson. What went well? What would you change?
8. The disclaimer. A short line noting that this is educational, not advice.
Tips:
- Use annotated charts, not just price screenshots
- Keep text short and clear
- Include losses at the same rate they occur
- Avoid exaggerated language
- Post after the trade is closed, not during
Benefits to you:
- Writing forces clarity
- Public accountability improves discipline
- Readers' questions reveal gaps in your thinking
A recap isn't a trophy. It's a teaching tool.
If you wouldn't be comfortable sharing the trade's reasoning, perhaps you shouldn't have taken it.
Try writing one recap this week for a trade that lost, using the same structure. Honest recaps of losses often teach more than recaps of wins.

Re: How to Write a Trade Recap That Teaches Instead of Brags
Small tip: write the recap before you know the full outcome if you can, at least the context and entry reasoning. Recaps written after a big win always sound more confident than the trade actually felt in the moment. I'd write the first half right after entry, then finish it when the trade closes. It's also worth including what you'd have done if price had gone the other way, because that's where readers learn about risk. Mention the mistake if there was one, even on a winner. A recap that says the entry was early but the trade worked anyway is more useful to readers than one that pretends it was perfect.

A mistake I see in recaps is leaving out the stop. Without the stop, readers can't judge the risk, and a big win might have come from a huge risk. Always include where the stop was and why. Mention the position size as a percentage of the account too, and the result in R. Making 300 dollars while risking 100 is a 3R trade, a decent result. The same 300 dollars from risking 20 percent tells a very different story. Including those numbers makes the recap useful as a lesson rather than a highlight.
