Scalping With SMC, A Cautious Framework

Some traders apply Smart Money Concepts to short-term scalps, using the 5-minute and 1-minute charts for entries within higher-timeframe zones. It can work, but it needs clear rules and a realistic view of costs.

A cautious framework:

1. Higher-timeframe bias. Determine direction from the 1H or 4H first.

2. Zone. Identify an order block or fair value gap on the 15M or 1H.

3. Session. Trade only during high-liquidity windows.

4. Liquidity sweep. On the 1M or 5M, wait for a sweep of a minor high or low inside the zone.

5. Shift. Look for a CHoCH with displacement.

6. Entry. Use the small FVG created by the shift.

7. Stop. Beyond the sweep, as tight as logic allows.

8. Target. The next minor liquidity level, aiming for at least 1:2.

9. Management. Take profit quickly. Don't turn a scalp into a swing.

10. Limits. Maximum trades per session and a strict loss limit.

Cautions:

- Spreads matter more on small stops
- Noise is higher on low timeframes
- Fatigue leads to mistakes
- Don't trade against the higher-timeframe bias

Test it on replay with realistic costs for at least 50 trades before going live.

Scalping punishes sloppiness. Precision, patience, and strict limits are the price of admission.

One caveat I want to add to this. On the 1 minute chart, a lot of order blocks and FVGs are just normal noise. I only bother with them when price is already inside a higher timeframe zone I marked before the session. Outside of that, I don't scalp them at all. It also helps to count how many 1 minute gaps appear in a normal London hour on EURUSD. It's usually a lot, and most of them get filled and ignored without anything happening. That shows how little each one means by itself. Combine the low timeframe trigger with the session timing and the higher timeframe zone, and the number of valid trades drops to a handful.

Example of what I mean by a realistic view of costs: if my stop is 5 pips and the spread plus commission is around 1 pip, I'm paying 20% of my risk just to enter. That changes which scalps are worth taking. I only take them when the target is clearly several times the stop. With a 2 to 1 target, the real ratio after costs becomes about 9 pips gained against 6 lost, closer to 1.5 to 1. So a strategy that looks fine at 40 percent win rate in theory may only break even. Track the actual costs per trade in the journal to be sure.

To give an idea of how selective I am with this: on a normal London morning, I might mark two higher timeframe zones and only one of them gets touched. If price doesn't reach it, I don't scalp anything, even if the 1 minute chart is full of patterns. That's the hardest part of the framework. On the 1 minute chart there's always a break of structure or a sweep somewhere, and without the higher timeframe filter you'd be trading noise all day. Most of my bad scalping days came from relaxing that rule because I'd been waiting for an hour.
