The Evening Shutdown Routine, Ending the Day Properly
How you end your trading day affects how you sleep, how you feel, and how you start tomorrow. A shutdown routine creates a clear boundary between work and rest.
Here's a simple ten to fifteen minute version.
1. Close all charts and platforms. Physically close them.
2. Check open positions. Confirm stops are in place, or close positions according to your plan.
3. Complete your journal. Log each trade, add screenshots, and note emotions.
4. Record the day's numbers. Result in R, rule violations, trades taken.
5. Write one lesson. Just one sentence about what you learned today.
6. Write tomorrow's top priority. For example, "Check the calendar for CPI. Stay out if price is in the middle of the range."
7. Clear your desk. Reset your space.
8. Say a final phrase. Something like "Trading is done for today." It signals your brain to switch off.
9. Do something non-trading. Walk, cook, read, talk with someone.
Benefits:
- Less mental carryover into the evening
- More complete records
- Better preparation for the next day
- Reduced urge to check charts compulsively
Without a shutdown, trading can leak into every hour of your life.
Closing the day on purpose helps you start the next one fresh.

Re: The Evening Shutdown Routine, Ending the Day Properly
One bit I'd stress: write tomorrow's single focus before you close the laptop. Just one line. It's a small thing but it means you start the next session with a direction instead of opening charts and looking for something to do. The focus can be about behaviour rather than a market view, like "no entries in the first fifteen minutes" or "only trade from marked levels". If it's a market note, keep it simple, such as which pair looks cleanest and the level that matters. Then in the morning routine, read that line first. It links one day to the next and makes the shutdown feel like a handover rather than just stopping.

Step 2 deserves a quick look at the overnight calendar before closing the platform. From London, the Asian session brings releases like Australian jobs, Japanese inflation figures and the RBA and BoJ decisions, all while you're asleep. A position that looks safe at 21:00 can open the morning on the wrong side of a gap if one of those lands against it. A two-minute check of what's due before 07:00 decides whether the stop stays where it is, gets tightened, or the position simply closes.

Another part I'd add: physically step away from the desk once the routine is done. Even ten minutes of walking helps your head switch off. Otherwise you finish the routine and then sit there checking prices anyway. Logging out of the trading app on the phone helps too, not just closing it, because the small effort of logging back in is enough to stop most idle checks. If you have positions open overnight with stops in place, there's nothing useful to do by watching them. Set an alert at the stop and target if it helps you relax, then leave it until the morning.
