The Friend Who Seemed to Get Rich Overnight (Story)

A composite story based on patterns many traders experience. Names are illustrative.

Picture Yemi, who had been studying for a year with slow but steady progress. Then a friend from school posted photos of a new car, expensive dinners, and screenshots of huge profits from trading.

Yemi felt something sink inside. Why was his friend so far ahead? Was he doing something wrong?

The next week, he abandoned his strategy, started taking bigger risks, and asked his friend for tips. The friend replied with a link to a paid group.

Over the next weeks, Yemi's account dropped. He kept asking himself how the friend was so successful.

Months later, he heard the truth from a mutual acquaintance. The friend had blown three accounts. The car was rented for photos. The screenshots were from a demo account. The paid group was earning him commissions.

Yemi felt relief, followed by anger, then clarity. He'd traded someone else's performance instead of building his own.

He went back to his plan. Slow progress, verified journal, small risk. Over the following year, his equity curve moved upward gently, with no screenshots to prove it.

Social media shows performance. It rarely shows process, losses, or context.

Comparison steals the one thing you can control, your own consistent effort.

Your journey doesn't need an audience. It needs discipline.

Screenshots are the weakest form of evidence in this business, and the story shows why. Anyone serious about checking a claim can ask for a broker statement covering several months, or a third-party tracked live account with the deposit and withdrawal history visible. Demo screenshots and single-day profits prove nothing.

The paid group detail matters too. A lot of these setups earn from introducing broker accounts or from subscriptions, so the incentive is to show activity and excitement, not results. The money is made on the people joining, whatever the trades do.

Yemi's reaction is the expensive part, not the friend. Abandoning a working plan to chase someone else's numbers is exactly the move that turns a slow learner into a broke one. A year of slow progress with a verified journal is worth more than any screenshot.

The part about Yemi wondering how his friend was so successful is where a little maths helps. If 100 people from the same school all start trading with no edge at all, roughly 3 of them will have five green months in a row by pure chance, and those are the 3 who post.

Nobody posts month six when it goes red. So what reaches Yemi's phone is a filtered sample even before anything is faked.

When someone shows me a track record now, I ask about the worst month rather than the best. A real scalping account over a year has losing weeks, and a smooth line with no dips usually means a grid or martingale that has not met its bad day yet.

The other question is position size against balance. A screenshot of a large profit on a 0.5 lot trade means something very different on a 2,000 dollar account than on a 50,000 dollar one.

None of that would have been comfortable for Yemi to ask a school friend. It would still have been cheaper than the weeks he spent trading someone else's plan.
