Consider two hypothetical traders. The first risks a disciplined 1% of their account per trade and compounds steadily over years, weathering losing streaks without ever putting the account in serious jeopardy. The second risks 10% or more per trade, chasing fast, dramatic gains, almost all the time.

Over a long enough timeline, the first trader will almost always outlast the second — not because the second trader's strategy or market read is necessarily worse, but because risking 10% per trade means a relatively normal losing streak, one that any strategy will eventually experience, can inflict genuinely catastrophic, account-ending damage. The math of large position sizing relative to account balance is unforgiving in a way that no amount of strategic skill can fully offset.

There's a common misconception worth directly addressing here: that scalping, because it demands speed and quick execution in the moment, is somehow at odds with patience and discipline as broader character traits. This isn't actually a contradiction, even though it can feel that way in the abstract. Scalping absolutely requires speed in execution — fast decisions, fast entries, fast exits, once a genuine setup appears. But it equally requires patience in strategy — waiting for genuine setups rather than forcing trades, maintaining consistent risk sizing regardless of recent results, and resisting the pull toward intensity and dramatic swings in favor of steady, repeatable process.

The traders who last in this business, across years rather than months, are consistently the ones who understood this distinction early and built their entire approach around it.
