Stop-Loss Placement Is Not Optional Decoration

Post by Fairman »

A stop-loss that sits at a round number because it "feels safe" isn't a real stop. It's wishful thinking wearing a risk-management costume.

Placing a stop at 50 pips because it's a nice round figure, or because that's "what everyone does," ignores the only question that actually matters: at what price does this setup become objectively wrong?

Real stop placement comes from market structure. That means below a swing low if you're long, above a swing high if you're short, outside the boundaries of a range you're trading, or beyond a liquidity pocket that the market would need to sweep before your thesis is invalidated.

Ask yourself this before every trade: if price hits my stop, does that actually prove my idea was wrong? If the honest answer is "not really, it might just be normal noise," your stop is in the wrong place — and no amount of position sizing math will fix a stop that isn't tied to the chart.

This is a small habit that compounds massively over hundreds of trades. Traders with structurally sound stops get stopped out for real reasons. Traders with arbitrary stops get stopped out by noise, over and over, bleeding the account on trades that would have worked if the stop had simply respected the chart.
