The overconfidence of a five trade winning streak

After a handful of quick wins, something shifts. Entries come faster. Stops feel unnecessary. Position size creeps up, and the sense of reading the market perfectly grows.

On short timeframes, streaks are easy to produce by luck. With dozens of trades in a session, runs of five or six winners happen regularly even for a strategy with no real edge. The brain does not see randomness. It sees skill.

The danger is what follows. Size increases at the moment when the sample is least informative, and the first loss in the new, larger size hurts more than the earlier wins helped.

A common defence is a fixed size regardless of recent results. Another is writing down, in advance, what a streak is supposed to trigger: nothing. The plan stays the same.

Watching for the feeling is helpful too. When the market seems easy and obvious, that is usually the moment to slow down and re-read the rules.

A neat check is plotting trade size against the number of consecutive wins before it. If the line slopes upward, the streak is driving behaviour. Seeing it on paper is often enough to stop it.

How does behaviour change after a streak of wins, and does the next hour pay for it?

Position size creeping up after five quick wins is the most dangerous part of the streak. Keeping size fixed regardless of recent results, and reviewing the streak's trades against the checklist afterwards, separates skill from lucky clustering.
