Trading from the couch

The laptop on the lap, a blanket, the television on. It is comfortable, and for a scalper it is a trap.

Comfort lowers arousal, which sounds good and is not. Attention drifts. Reaction times lengthen. The sense of occasion that makes a person treat trading as a serious activity fades, and rules get bent more easily.

There is also the practical side: a laptop trackpad is less precise than a mouse, a small screen hides information, and a weaker connection may be in play.

Environment sets expectations. A dedicated desk, a proper screen, and a clear routine signal that this is work. Some traders even dress differently, a small ritual that shifts the mindset.

It does not need to be fancy. A table, a chair, and a mouse are enough. The point is separating trading time from leisure time, so the brain knows which mode to enter.

Another benefit of a fixed workspace is that the habits are tied to it. Sitting down at the desk becomes the cue to focus, and leaving it is the cue to stop.

Has the location of a trading session ever correlated with the quality of the trades?

I tried scalping from my phone for a few weeks when I was travelling. My execution was clearly worse. Average entry delay compared to my desk setup was around one to two seconds, mostly from fiddling with the order screen. On a phone, I also couldn't see multiple timeframes or my usual indicators clearly. My results for those weeks were negative, while the same period on my desk setup was positive. I now only manage existing trades from the phone, never open new ones. A phone is fine for monitoring, not for scalping.

I did a small experiment on this last year, because I suspected my sofa sessions were worse than my desk ones. For about eight weeks I recorded the location next to every trade and my own rating of focus from one to five. On the sofa I took 22 percent more trades per hour and my average rating was 2.6, versus 3.9 at the desk. The net result in R was slightly negative on the sofa and clearly positive at the desk.

The extra trades were mostly low quality entries taken out of boredom, and I broke my size rule more often there. It was not an issue with the laptop alone, I noticed that my posture and my breathing were also different.

Now I have a simple rule: no new trades unless I am sitting at the desk with the main monitor on. If I am away from it, I only manage existing positions.
