Close-only mode and the pair that suddenly stops opening

Close-only mode and the pair that suddenly stops opening

A symbol can be set to close-only. Existing positions can be managed or closed, but no new ones can be opened. Brokers use this before major events, during risk reviews, or when a liquidity provider disappears.

For a scalper, it shows up as a failed order with a message about trading being disabled. The chart is moving. Quotes are flowing. Everything looks alive except the one thing that matters.

The change is often announced with little warning, if at all. Some brokers flip it a few minutes before a data release. Others do it when a pair becomes too volatile.

The difference between close-only and fully disabled matters. In close-only, a stop can still execute, and a position can be exited. When fully disabled, even closing can be blocked, which has trapped positions during extreme events.

Checking the symbol's trade mode in the specification, and looking at the platform's notices before big events, reduces the chance of a nasty surprise.

Another sign of trouble is a symbol that opens fine in the morning and shows "close only" by afternoon. The pattern often repeats around the same times, which can be logged.

Some brokers also flip symbols to close-only automatically when their liquidity providers report problems. The platform may show a normal quote stream while the order gateway refuses new positions, which creates the odd experience of a perfectly alive chart that cannot be traded.

A routine check at the start of each session helps: open a micro-sized order on each pair planned for the day, and close it. It costs a fraction of a pip and confirms that the symbol, the account, and the connection are all working before real size goes in.

A pair that went close-only without warning: what was happening in the market?

It happened to me on a smaller exotic cross about a year ago. I'd been trading it for weeks, then one morning my buy order failed with a trade-disabled style message while the chart was ticking normally. I assumed the platform was broken and restarted twice before checking the symbol specification, which had switched to close-only.

The broker later said their main liquidity provider for that pair had pulled pricing after a sharp move overnight, and they'd restricted new positions until they found a replacement. It lasted about two days. The worrying part was that I had an open position at the time and could only hope the close button still worked.

Since then I do the micro order test you mention, at the start of each session on every pair I plan to trade. It takes under a minute and costs almost nothing. I also stopped trading anything outside the main pairs at that broker, since that's where these restrictions seem to appear first.

Brokers sometimes put a symbol into close only mode, which means existing positions can be closed but no new positions can be opened. This can happen for several reasons: a liquidity provider withdrawing, extreme volatility, regulatory changes, or the broker deciding to stop offering a pair. For traders, it can be a surprise, especially if an EA keeps trying to open trades and receives errors. Checking the trade mode of each symbol before sending orders, using SymbolInfoInteger with SYMBOL_TRADE_MODE in MQL, allows the EA to detect the restriction and stop trying.
