Proposal: a monthly thread for sharing one lesson from the journal

Post by FXS London Scalper »

Many members keep journals, but the insights rarely make it into discussion. A simple idea for the community would be a recurring monthly thread where each participant shares one lesson learned from their own records that month.

The format could be short: the observation, the evidence from the journal, and what you plan to change. For example, a member might notice that trades taken in the first fifteen minutes after London open had poorer outcomes than those taken later, and decide to wait.

This would build a library of practical lessons over time, each grounded in someone's data rather than opinion. It would also encourage honest reporting, including mistakes.

To keep it useful, contributions could avoid promoting products or signals, and focus on method. Replies could ask questions about how the observation was measured.

Would members be interested in this? Suggestions for the format are welcome, including whether it should be monthly or quarterly.

I like this idea, and I would be interested, mostly because the first thing I learned from my own journal came from someone else asking me how I measured it. My lesson last month was that trades I took in the first ten minutes after the New York open had an average result of minus 1.4 pips, while the same setup half an hour later averaged slightly positive. I'd have never noticed without sorting by time of entry.

For the format, I would keep it monthly but ask people to post the sample size along with the observation. A lesson based on twelve trades is worth sharing, but readers should know it is twelve trades and not two hundred. A line saying what the contributor is going to test next would also make the following month's thread more useful.

One suggestion on moderation, if you do it. Ask people to say what they changed afterwards and what happened, because that follow-up is where the real learning is. A short list of results from those changes would become a very practical resource over time.
