Using futures volume as a stand-in for real spot volume

Spot forex volume is unavailable to retail traders, but CME currency futures publish actual traded volume and trade-by-trade data. These contracts track spot closely, and big flows in spot often appear in futures too.

Scalpers can use futures data as a volume and activity indicator. A surge in 6E (euro) futures volume suggests heavier participation in EUR/USD. Volume profiles built from futures show levels where much trading occurred, serving as potential support or resistance.

There are limitations. Futures trade mostly during certain hours, with decreasing volume outside US and European sessions. The contract rolls quarterly, which adds complexity. And futures represent only a fraction of the total market.

Timestamps and data subscriptions are also required, and the feed must be aligned with the spot data used for execution. Latency between the two can distort short-term comparisons.

Even so, real volume is a better guide than tick count for judging whether a move has participation behind it.

Has anyone integrated futures volume into a spot scalping workflow, and what did it add?
