The unchanged decision with a changed statement

Central banks sometimes leave rates exactly as expected, and the market still moves sharply. The reason is in the statement. A single word added or removed, a changed phrase about future policy, a different description of inflation, can reshape expectations.

Algorithms compare the new statement with the previous one almost instantly, flagging differences. The first move often comes from that comparison, before anyone has absorbed the meaning.

Humans read more slowly and add context. The second move comes as traders interpret what the changes imply for the path of rates. It can be in the opposite direction.

For a short term trader, the lesson is that a decision in line with expectations is not a non-event. The text can be the real news, and the surprise can be hidden in the wording.

Reading the previous statement before the meeting, and noting which phrases the market seems to care about, helps in understanding the reaction.

One habit that helps is pasting the old and new statements into a diff tool before the next meeting, to see precisely what changed in past decisions. The patterns in what the market cared about become clear after a few comparisons.

Has a rate decision that matched the forecast ever triggered a big move because of the wording?
