Staircase prices: the signature of an algorithm

Look closely at a one second chart during a quiet period and a pattern appears. Price moves up in neat steps: a small push, a pause of roughly the same duration, another push of similar size. The stairs can continue for minutes.

That regularity is not natural. Human traders do not behave with such precision. It is usually the result of an execution algorithm slicing a large order into equal pieces released at set intervals.

Recognising it helps. A steady staircase suggests a patient buyer or seller who is not in a hurry, and the move can last until the order is complete. Trying to fade it often fails, because the algorithm is indifferent to short-term resistance.

The tricky part is knowing when it ends. Staircases usually stop abruptly, and the price often retraces some of the move afterwards, because the buying or selling pressure disappears.

Entering with the staircase and tightening up quickly can work, as can waiting for the end and fading the exhaustion. Both require attention to the shape of the move rather than the level.

A way to look for it: switch to a one second or tick chart during a quiet hour and look for a series of equal-sized moves at regular intervals. Marking the timestamps of each step shows whether the spacing is even. If it is, the pattern is almost certainly mechanical.

Once found, the interesting question is what the staircase says about size. The longer it runs, the larger the order. A staircase that runs for twenty minutes represents more flow than one that runs for two, and the unwind afterwards tends to be proportionate.

Not every staircase leads to a trade, and many pass unnoticed. But learning to see them adds a useful layer to reading short term price action.

Has a staircase pattern ever offered a trade worth taking?
