Tick charts and range bars for the sub-minute crowd

Time based charts treat a quiet minute and a frantic minute the same way. A candle forms regardless of how much happened inside it. For very short-term trading, that wastes information.

Tick charts build a bar after a fixed number of ticks. Range bars build when price moves a set distance. Both adapt to activity: more bars when the market is busy, fewer when it is slow.

Fans like how they filter noise. A quiet period produces few bars, so fewer meaningless signals. A fast move produces many, giving finer resolution when it matters.

The drawbacks are real. Time disappears from the axis, which complicates news timing. Platforms need extra tools to build them. And some range bar implementations repaint or depend on how the data is sourced.

Testing on the same setup both ways usually reveals which fits a style. Some find the improvement dramatic, others see little difference.

A good first experiment is a tick chart set to a number of ticks that produces roughly the same number of bars per hour as the one minute chart during a normal session. Comparing signals side by side over a few days shows whether the non-time version adds anything.

Have non-time charts improved signal quality compared with ordinary candles?
