Leverage limits under ESMA rules: what retail clients in the EU actually get

Post by FXS London Scalper »

Retail clients of brokers regulated in the EU face leverage caps that depend on the instrument: up to 30:1 on major currency pairs and lower for minors, gold, indices and other assets. Some traders find this restrictive and look at offshore entities or professional status.

It is worth working through what the cap means in practice. With 30:1 on EURUSD, a position of one standard lot requires margin of roughly a thirtieth of its notional value. For a trader risking 1 percent per trade with a reasonable stop, the required margin is usually far below the account balance, so the cap rarely binds.

Where it does bind is for strategies with very tight stops and large positions, or for traders holding many positions at once. In those cases, the cap may be a useful brake rather than an obstacle.

Professional status removes the cap but also some protections, such as negative balance protection in some cases.

Has the leverage cap ever limited a strategy you wanted to run?
