What negative balance protection really covers in the fine print

Post by Shadow Trader »

After January 2015, many traders learned that an account can go below zero. Negative balance protection exists to prevent that, and its presence is a selling point. The details vary.

Some brokers offer it as a regulatory requirement for retail clients. Others offer it as a policy that can be withdrawn. Professional-classified accounts, offshore entities, and certain account types may exclude it.

Even where it applies, the sequence matters. A negative balance is typically cleared after the fact: the broker resets the account to zero. In the meantime, the trader may face margin calls, stop-outs at terrible prices, or frozen positions.

It doesn't prevent a loss of the entire deposit. It only prevents debt beyond it.

For a scalper using tight stops, the risk of a gap beyond a stop is small but real, especially around news and weekends. Understanding whether the account is covered, and how, is a basic piece of due diligence.

The relevant language usually sits in the client agreement, under terms like "client money" or "account closure." The wording can be dull and revealing at once.

Under which conditions can the broker withdraw negative balance protection?
