Brackets and OCO: not every platform gives both halves

Post by Shadow Trader »

A scalper places a trade with a stop-loss and a take-profit. When one hits, the other should disappear. On MetaTrader that's built in, because both attach to the position. For separate pending orders, such as two entries where one cancels the other, true OCO is missing from many retail platforms.

Without it, workarounds are fragile. An EA watches for one order to fill and cancels the other. The gap between fill and cancel is where double fills happen, particularly in fast markets.

Other platforms and APIs offer proper OCO or bracket orders. The server manages the linkage, so there's no gap.

For scalping strategies that rely on multiple pending orders, the platform's order types constrain the design. A strategy that needs OCO can't run reliably on one that lacks it.

Even with brackets, check the behavior on partial fills. If the entry fills only partly, does the stop and target cover just that part or the full order size?

Reading the platform documentation on order types and testing each in a demo environment prevents surprises.

How was true OCO support confirmed on the platform: documentation, support, or a live test?
