Cent accounts and standard accounts are sometimes not the same execution

Post by Shadow Trader »

Cent and micro accounts are often used to test strategies with real money at small size. The assumption is that they're identical to standard accounts, just with smaller numbers. Often that's wrong.

Some brokers run these accounts on a separate server, with a different liquidity setup, and sometimes in-house dealing instead of external routing. Fills may be better, since there's no real market impact, or worse, because wider spreads are common on the small-account tier.

A strategy tested on a cent account and then moved to a standard account can behave differently in ways the numbers don't predict. Slippage patterns shift. Spreads shift. Requote behavior shifts.

The test to do before concluding anything: compare spreads and fills on the cent account against the standard account on the same pair at the same minute. Even a few dozen paired observations show whether they're truly equivalent.

None of this says cent accounts are bad, they're a good way to practice real-money psychology. It just says the results shouldn't be treated as proof that a strategy transfers.

Anyone tested a strategy on cent and then standard, and how closely did the results match?
