Consensus, whispers, and what the market really trades

Post by Shadow Trader »

The published forecast, the consensus, is a median of economist estimates. The market doesn't always trade against it. Positioning and rumor create a second, informal expectation: the whisper number.

A release that beats the consensus can still push the currency down if the whisper was higher. A miss can trigger a rally if everyone feared worse.

For scalpers, this is why a "good" number can produce a "bad" reaction. The direction of the surprise relative to consensus is only half the story.

Clues about the whisper appear in the price action before the release. A currency that has rallied hard into a data point suggests an expectation of a strong print. The bar is higher than the consensus says.

Another sign is the options market. Implied volatility around the event, and skew toward one direction, reflect what participants fear or expect.

No retail trader can know the whisper precisely. But treating the consensus with suspicion, and watching how price behaved beforehand, explains many apparent paradoxes.

Think of a good number that sent a currency lower. Was there a hint in the pre-release move?
