Asian session range fakeouts on EURUSD

Asian session range fakeouts on EURUSD

Myth: low volatility sessions are safe for tight scalping.

Reality: EURUSD during Asia often drifts in a narrow range, tempting traders into mean reversion trades, and then gets run through a few minutes before Europe wakes up. The move looks like a breakout and fails within an hour.

Some of the pattern is mechanical. Stops cluster just beyond the Asian high and low because those levels are the most visible on any chart. Large players know it, and the opening liquidity in London gives them a convenient place to get size done.

Another piece is that EURUSD is simply not an Asian pair. Participation is thin, so a small order moves price more than it would later in the day.

Scalpers with a good record on EURUSD in Asia often have a specific reason, like trading only the quietest hours or using wider stops than usual. Trading it the same way as in London rarely holds up.

A small test: mark the Asian high and low on EURUSD for twenty days, then tally how often London took out at least one side in the first hour, and how often that move kept going for another thirty pips versus snapping back. The answer varies by period, but most traders are surprised by how often the first break fails.

Is EURUSD in Asia worth trading at all, or are the Asian specialists like USDJPY and AUDJPY better places for that time slot?

EUR/USD often trades in a narrow range during the Asian session, since neither the eurozone nor the US is active. Before London opens, price sometimes breaks the Asian range on one side, triggering stops, and then reverses once London traders arrive. That's the fakeout people talk about. It happens because liquidity is still thin before 7am London, so a modest order can push price through the range edge without real follow through. London is when the real liquidity arrives. Before then, moves are easily pushed around.

I would not call EURUSD in Asia worthless, but I stopped trading it with the London approach. When I tracked this over 40 mornings, the Asian range on EURUSD was usually just 25 to 35 pips, and my average spread was already 0.8, so a reversion trade needed a very precise entry. The break of the high or low before 6am London happened on about half of those mornings, and the majority of those breaks came back inside within 40 minutes.

What worked better for me was to trade the return into the range, not the break. I waited for a close back inside by a few pips, entered with a stop just beyond the extreme, and aimed at the middle of the range. That gave me about 1.3R on average over a small sample, which I would not oversell, but it was far better than my earlier attempts to fade every edge touch.

For USDJPY and AUDJPY I do take straightforward moves in Asia, since the participation there is real and the stops feel more natural.
