Hunting icebergs in a market with no tape

An iceberg order shows a small visible size and replaces it as it fills, hiding a much larger total. On futures exchanges, traders spot them by watching the tape: a price level that keeps absorbing trades without moving.

In spot forex, there is no public tape. But the footprint can be spotted indirectly. Price hits a level repeatedly, with tick volume surging each time, and cannot make progress. The move stalls like it has run into a wall.

That behaviour can mean a large order is being worked. It can also mean a barrier option, a fix-related order, or simply a cluster of limit orders at a round number.

The practical use is cautious. A stalled push into a level with heavy activity suggests that continuing in the same direction has worse odds. Fading or waiting for the wall to be absorbed is generally better than assuming the breakout will happen.

Perfect knowledge is impossible, and it is easy to see icebergs everywhere after reading about them. Keeping notes on each suspected case, and checking later what happened, keeps the instinct honest.

A note of caution: it is very easy to find icebergs after the fact. Any level that held looks like a hidden order in hindsight. The only honest test is writing down the suspicion in real time, with the level and the reason, and checking later how many of the suspicions were right.

Have suspected large orders ever been confirmed by what happened next?
