The CME lists futures on major currencies, like the euro, yen, and pound. Those contracts trade with a central order book, and volume and price data are real and transparent.
Spot forex follows the futures closely, since arbitrage keeps them linked. That makes futures volume a helpful cross-reference.
A burst of volume in euro futures often coincides with a move in EURUSD. A move in spot without a futures volume increase might lack conviction.
Access to futures data costs money, and platforms differ. Some charting services offer delayed or real-time data for a fee. There is also the matter of contract rollover, since futures expire quarterly and the volume shifts between contracts.
For scalpers, the main use is confirming whether a move has real participation behind it. It is not a signal by itself, and it needs testing.
The lag between futures and spot is tiny, so the information is useful for context but hard to exploit for entries.
Has anyone added futures volume to the spot analysis, and what did it show?
