Yen crosses and the equity futures connection

Post by Amanhasnoname »

During risk-sensitive periods, yen crosses move with stock index futures. When US equity futures fall sharply, USDJPY and the crosses often drop with them.

For scalpers, this relationship offers a lead indicator. Equity futures trade nearly around the clock, and a sudden move there can precede the yen pairs by seconds.

Putting an index futures chart next to the yen pair can show the lag. At times, the futures move first, and the spot pair follows within moments. At other times, the connection fades.

The relationship is not constant. It strengthens during stress and weakens when other drivers, like rate differentials, dominate.

Testing it means recording times when futures moved by a set amount and observing the response of the yen pair in the next few minutes. If a consistent lag exists and exceeds the costs, there may be something to use.

Also watch for the opposite problem: a chart overloaded with correlated instruments, which adds noise and splits attention.
