Lunch hour lulls and the false breakout

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Between the London lunch and the New York open, many pairs go quiet. Volume drops, ranges shrink, and price drifts in small, choppy moves.

Breakout strategies suffer in this window. Price pokes beyond a level on thin volume, and then returns. The false breakout rate rises, and spreads sometimes widen slightly.

Mean-reversion strategies tend to do better, since price keeps bouncing within a range. But the range is small, so the edge per trade is limited by costs.

The window varies by pair. EURUSD slows noticeably, while some crosses stay lively. Looking at average range by half-hour for the pairs traded shows the quiet periods clearly.

A simple adaptation is either switching to a different strategy during the lull or stepping away entirely. The latter has an underrated benefit: it saves energy for the NY open.

Which hours are the quietest on the pairs traded, and how is the lull handled?
