Time stops: leaving when nothing happens

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Scalping setups often have a short shelf life. If price does not move in the expected direction within a few minutes, the reason for the trade has faded.

A time stop closes the trade after a set period, regardless of profit or loss. It protects against positions lingering until something unexpected happens, such as news or a spread widening.

The right duration depends on the strategy. A momentum scalp that normally pays within two minutes might use a five minute limit. A mean reversion trade might need longer.

The journal helps find the number. Look at the time to target for winning trades. If 90 percent of winners hit within four minutes, trades still open at six are likely to be poor.

Time stops also free attention and capital for the next setup.

Some traders resist them, since the position might be about to work. Occasionally it is. The test is whether the net result improves with the rule.

What time stop is used, and what does it do to the results?
