Futures lead spot: watching the CME as a tell

Post by Shadow Trader »

Spot forex has no central exchange, but currency futures trade on the CME. EUR futures (6E) and others carry a large share of institutional flow, and they offer something spot can't: real volume and a real order book.

Because futures are transparent and centralized, they often lead spot by small fractions of a second. A big order in 6E shows up as a jump in the futures price and then in spot as arbitrageurs align them.

Retail scalpers can't compete on that latency. But watching a futures chart alongside spot gives a view of volume that tick counts can't. A surge in actual contracts traded signals real interest, as opposed to a flurry of quotes.

The trade-off is cost and complexity. Futures data feeds cost money, and contract sizes and expiry dates complicate things. Front-month rolls make the continuous chart jump.

Still, even a delayed futures volume profile adds context. Where real contracts changed hands, support and resistance tend to be better defined than the ones drawn from spot candles.

Is futures volume a usable guide for spot scalps, or does the data delay ruin it?
