Quarter-end and month-end spreads

Post by Shadow Trader »

Spreads and liquidity don't behave the same on the last days of a month. Month-end brings rebalancing flows, hedging adjustments, and balance-sheet constraints at banks. Quarter-end and year-end amplify this.

Banks watch their balance sheets on reporting dates, so they pull back from providing liquidity in some pairs and some forward markets. That shows up in swap points, which can swing wildly, and in spot spreads that creep wider than usual during the New York afternoon.

The effect is subtle in majors and bigger in crosses and exotics. A pair that costs 1.5 pips on a normal day can cost 3 on the last day of a quarter.

Then there's the fix. Month-end flows build into the 4pm London benchmark, and the move around it can be sharp and one-sided. Price may then partly retrace the next day.

A calendar reminder for the last two business days of each month is enough. It doesn't require a strategy change, just awareness that costs and noise rise.
