Weekend headlines and Sunday's surprise

Post by Amanhasnoname »

News does not stop when markets close. A political event, an election result, or a geopolitical shock on Saturday can leave the market ready to gap at the Sunday open.

The risk for scalpers is mostly in forgetting. A position left open for the weekend carries that risk, and so do pending orders. A stop loss will fill at the first quote available, which might be many pips beyond.

Even for flat traders, Sunday evening can be hazardous. Opening a position in the first minutes, when spreads are wide and the price is still finding a level, is an easy way to lose money.

A simple ritual helps: check headlines on Sunday before opening the platform, and if something big happened, wait for liquidity to build before trading.

Also, pending orders placed before the weekend should be reviewed. An old limit order can fill at a surprising level, or at an unexpected price in a gap.

What is the Sunday routine, and has weekend news ever changed the plan for the week?
