Round numbers: magnet or wall?

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Round numbers like 1.1000 or 150.00 are treated almost mystically in trading forums. Price is said to stall there, reverse there, or get pulled toward them, depending on the day.

There is some truth. Orders cluster at round levels: take profits, stops, option strikes, and humans placing orders by habit. That creates liquidity and sometimes resistance.

The mistake is treating the level as a rule. It works more like a place where something might happen, and the thing that happens varies. Sometimes price slices through with almost no pause. Sometimes it chops around for an hour.

A more useful approach is measuring. Pick one pair, mark every round number touch over a month, and record what happened in the next five minutes: bounce, break, or chop. The percentages are often not as dramatic as the stories, but they can still show an edge.

Also worth separating 00 levels from 50 levels, since the behavior tends to differ.

What does the data say about round numbers on the pair being traded, bounce or break?
