Most platforms let an order carry a short comment. Hardly anyone uses it, and it's one of the cheapest analysis tools available.
Putting a setup code in the comment, such as brk for a breakout, fade for a reversal, or rng for a range trade, turns the account history into a searchable dataset. After a few hundred trades, grouping results by tag shows which setups actually pay and which only feel good.
Keep codes short, since many brokers truncate comments to around 30 characters, and some overwrite them when a position is partially closed. Testing the behaviour on a small trade avoids surprises.
Adding the session or a quality grade to the tag extends it further. A code like brk-ldn-A takes seconds to type and saves hours of manual sorting later.
Automated systems can write tags themselves, including the parameters in force at entry.
The history export then goes straight into a spreadsheet pivot table.
What is the single most useful tag you could add to your trades?
