Practising on replayed tick data without peeking ahead

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Replay tools let traders practise on historical sessions as though they were live. They're a cheap way to build skill, as long as the practice is honest.

The main trap is knowledge of the outcome. If a session is replayed on a day already seen, decisions are contaminated by memory. Using random dates, preferably unfamiliar ones, reduces the problem.

Realism is the second issue. Replay environments typically fill at the quoted price with no slippage. Adding a manual penalty, such as an extra half pip on each entry and exit, keeps the results closer to live conditions.

Practice also needs structure. Setting a goal, such as testing one specific setup over fifty replayed occurrences, produces more learning than random trading.

Recording the results in the same journal format as live trades allows comparison. If replay results are far better than live, the gap points to execution costs or discipline.

Do you use replay for practice, and how do you keep it honest?
