The value of a pip depends on the pair and the account currency. For pairs where the account currency is the quote, it's fixed. For others, it moves with exchange rates.
Trading GBPJPY on a dollar account means the pip value in dollars depends on USDJPY. As that rate changes, the dollar value of a pip changes with it, albeit slowly.
For a risk calculation, using a stale pip value gives wrong lot sizes. Over weeks or months, the drift can reach several percent, enough to distort risk limits.
Many platforms calculate pip value automatically, and good calculators fetch the current rate. Hand-built spreadsheets often use fixed numbers entered long ago.
It's worth checking by opening a tiny position and reading how much a one-pip move changes the floating profit. The result should match the calculator.
For consistency, set a monthly reminder to update any manual parameters.
Small errors like this don't ruin an account, but they quietly distort the numbers on which decisions rest.
