Implied volatility as a regime dial

Options prices embed the market's expectation of future volatility. For currencies, implied volatility indexes track this for major pairs.

When implied vol rises, the market expects larger moves, and spreads and slippage tend to follow. When it falls, the market is calm, and ranges contract.

A scalper can use it as a regime dial. A rising implied volatility before an event signals that a move is anticipated. A sudden drop afterward, the volatility crush, means the uncertainty is resolved.

It also helps in sizing and in choosing strategies. Mean reversion works better when implied volatility is low. Breakout approaches tend to work better when it's rising.

The data is available from broker platforms or financial sites, often with some delay. A one-minute delay doesn't matter for regime assessment.

A weakness is that implied volatility is forward-looking and doesn't tell when. A high reading can persist while realized moves are subdued.

Comparing implied with realized volatility reveals when options are expensive or cheap relative to what is actually happening, giving a hint of how the market perceives risk.
