Reserve managers: the slow giants

Reserve managers: the slow giants

Central banks and sovereign wealth funds hold trillions in foreign reserves. When they adjust the currency composition, the flows are large and deliberately gradual.

A reserve manager reallocating a billion dollars into euros doesn't hit the market at once. The orders are spread over days or weeks, executed through banks, and timed to minimize impact.

The result is a quiet, persistent pressure. A currency drifts higher on low volume, with dips attracting buyers. Chart patterns look constructive, but the engine is a patient order.

Reserve data, published with a delay, hints at such shifts. The currency composition of reserves is released quarterly by the IMF.

For scalpers, this is background. It doesn't affect minute-by-minute decisions. It does explain why some trends persist longer than technicals suggest, and why mean reversion sometimes fails.

It's another reminder that the market includes participants with no interest in short-term profit. They trade for policy, risk management, or mandate reasons. Their orders are often the ones providing the liquidity that scalpers use.

Understanding who the counterparties are is part of understanding why prices behave as they do.

Slow, non-profit-driven flows: how much weight do they get when judging a trend?
