Account leverage tiers and why bigger is not always better for a scalper

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Offering 1:500 or 1:1000 leverage is a marketing favourite. Whether it helps a scalper depends on how it's used.

High leverage reduces margin per trade, which allows more positions with less capital. It also reduces the buffer before a margin call. A small adverse move with a large position can liquidate an account faster than expected.

Some brokers attach conditions. Leverage reduces automatically as equity or position size grows, or around news and weekends. A tier that looks generous at 1:500 may become 1:100 as soon as exposure increases.

For scalpers, a decent middle ground exists. Enough leverage to run a strategy without tying up capital, but not so high that tiny miscalculations result in margin calls. Many experienced traders use a fraction of what's available.

A good test is to calculate the margin level after a worst-case adverse move, including a spread spike. If the account survives with room to spare, the leverage is adequate.

Which leverage level do you actually use, compared with what is offered?
