Trading servers need updating, and brokers usually schedule it for the quietest moment, often late Friday or early Sunday. Most traders never read the announcement, which sits in an email or a banner on the client portal.
During maintenance, the server may refuse orders, drop connections or show frozen prices. Sometimes it's a few minutes, sometimes an hour. A pending order or automated system running through it can behave unpredictably, and some platforms re-send queued requests once the server returns.
The risk for scalpers is the reconnection moment. Prices on the first tick after the break may differ from the last one by a lot, and an expert advisor that wakes up and acts on stale conditions can open a trade that makes no sense.
A useful habit is to pause automation before announced maintenance and restart it after confirming that quotes are flowing normally. Checking the broker's notices once a week takes seconds.
Unplanned outages are a separate matter, and a second account with another broker can serve as an emergency exit for hedging exposure.
Where does your broker publish maintenance notices, and do you follow them?
