Machines reading headlines

Machines reading headlines

Some trading algorithms parse news in real time. They scan wires for keywords, assign sentiment, and trade within milliseconds. A headline containing "raises rates" or "unexpectedly" can trigger orders before a human finishes reading.

The result is a price move that precedes any rational interpretation. The first jump reflects the algorithms' keyword reaction, not the full meaning of the story.

That explains some strange behavior. A headline whose first line seems hawkish causes a spike up, then a drop as the second line clarifies the opposite. Machines react to the first, humans to the whole.

Misreadings happen. A headline about a rate decision "no change" might be parsed as a change if the words are ambiguous. Corrections follow, and the price whipsaws.

For retail scalpers, the speed disadvantage is permanent. The best use of this knowledge is to avoid trading the first seconds after a headline and to be suspicious of moves that seem out of proportion to the story.

Reading the full text, then waiting for the market's reaction to settle, is slower and generally safer.

Spike then reversal: which recent headline caused the most confusing version?
