The case for skipping trades: noise versus signal

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Scalping rewards activity, or so it seems. Many setups only appear a handful of times per session, and the best traders often pass on the majority of marginal ones.

Each trade has cost. Spread, slippage, commission and the mental energy of managing it. A setup with a slight edge before costs may have a negative one after.

The skill lies in distinguishing high-quality signals from noise. Scoring setups against a checklist of conditions, and requiring a minimum score to enter, makes the filter explicit.

Journal data usually confirms the point. Trades labelled marginal or forced average worse than trades that met every criterion. Removing them improves the result and reduces the stress.

Letting a session pass with few or no trades isn't failure. Sometimes the market just doesn't offer anything worth taking.

Treating the absence of trades as a valid outcome frees attention for the moments that count.

What proportion of potential setups do you skip, and how do you decide?
