Break-even stops can lower expectancy even though they feel safer

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Moving a stop to break-even after a small profit feels sensible. Risk is gone. The trade can't lose anymore. What's easy to miss is the effect on the whole system.

Many trades pull back to the entry before continuing. A break-even stop turns those into scratches, with a small cost from spread, instead of letting them run to the target. Over many trades, winners get cut and the win rate drops.

Whether it helps depends on the strategy. Where price tends to run straight, it protects without harm. Where pullbacks are common, it cuts the edge.

The right way to decide is testing on tick data with and without the rule, at several trigger distances. Often the improvement in drawdown is small and the loss in total profit is larger.

Psychological comfort has some value, but it should be priced. If the rule costs a third of the profit, it's an expensive way to feel calm.

Does moving to break-even improve or reduce your results in testing?
