In the minutes before a major release, an odd thing sometimes happens. Price stops moving, ticks slow down, and the spread narrows. It looks calm, and it isn't.
Participants are waiting. Liquidity providers hold quotes tight because few orders are arriving, but they're also preparing to widen at the instant of the release. Pending orders from traders build up on both sides.
For scalpers, this lull can tempt them into taking small trades. The odds are poor. Ranges are tiny, and a position held into the event is exposed to gaps and wide spreads.
Instead, the pre-news quiet works as a signal. When a pair that normally moves is frozen for several minutes before a scheduled release, the move is coming.
Some use the time to plan: which levels matter, what size to risk, and what scenario would justify entry after the release. Others shut the platform and watch.
Either way, the minutes before major data are better spent preparing than trading.
