Spot forex has no central tape. CME futures do, and they're closely tied to spot prices through arbitrage. That makes futures data a useful window into real activity.
Euro FX futures, for example, show the traded volume, large prints, and the order book depth at each level. Spikes in volume often coincide with news and big moves in EURUSD.
Scalpers can use that in a few ways. Volume surges confirm that a breakout has participation rather than just thin air. Unusual size at a level suggests interest there. The futures session also has its own opening, closing and settlement events that influence spot.
Costs are an obstacle. Real-time CME data requires a subscription, and charting platforms that handle it add more expense.
There are also differences to keep in mind. Futures trade on a schedule and have quarterly expiries, and the basis between futures and spot shifts slightly.
Even so, for those who want actual volume, it's the nearest thing available.
