VWAP in forex is a trap if there is no real volume behind it

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Volume-weighted average price is a staple in equities and futures. In spot forex, it has a basic problem, because there's no consolidated volume.

Platforms that plot VWAP on forex charts are using tick volume as the weight. That tells something about how often price changed at each level, not how much traded there. The line looks authoritative, but it rests on a proxy.

Sometimes it still works as a reference. Many participants watch similar lines, so price reacts to them regardless of the data behind them. That's self-fulfilling, and it can be traded.

But assuming it represents where real money sits is a mistake.

A better source is futures. CME currency futures publish real volume, and VWAP calculated on those contracts is a cleaner measure for the corresponding pairs. Some traders overlay futures VWAP on spot charts.

Whichever version is used, it's worth knowing what is underneath it.

Does anyone use futures-derived levels on spot charts?
