USDCHF versus EURCHF: same franc, very different animals

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Both pairs involve the Swiss franc, so they get lumped together. They behave nothing alike.

USDCHF is basically the mirror image of EURUSD. Its moves mostly reflect dollar strength and weakness, so a scalper watching EURUSD already has a read on it. Liquidity is decent, spreads are moderate, and the pair trends reasonably when the dollar does.

EURCHF is a different story. It's a low-volatility cross with a history of central bank involvement. Ranges are small, spreads are relatively wide for the size of the moves, and it can sit still for hours before jumping on a headline.

After the 2015 shock, many brokers raised margin and spreads on franc pairs, and some still treat EURCHF cautiously.

For scalping, USDCHF is the more practical choice. EURCHF suits those willing to wait and accept small moves.

The lesson is general: pairs sharing a currency don't share a personality. Each needs its own testing.
