Every scalper has done it. A trade that was supposed to last minutes is still open the next morning, because it was forgotten, the platform froze, or hope took over.
The immediate damage is usually the market move. The less visible damage is swap, which can be negative on both sides of the trade for some pairs, particularly exotics. Then there's the spread at rollover, which can trigger stops, and the exposure to gaps.
A few habits help. A daily alert at the end of the session that lists open positions. A strict rule that any trade open beyond a set time gets closed. And a platform setting or script that closes positions automatically at a certain hour.
Some traders also keep the size small enough that an overnight mistake is survivable. That doesn't excuse the error, but it limits the cost.
Another easy safeguard is to keep the account margin low enough that a stray overnight trade cannot cause real damage. Some traders use a separate small account for experiments precisely so forgotten positions never touch the main balance.
How does your routine make sure nothing gets left open?
