Order modification limits and the trap of constant stop adjustment

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Trailing stops and constant tweaking feel productive. Servers see it differently. Many brokers limit the number of order modifications within a time period, and some treat excessive requests as abusive.

Symptoms include rejected modifications, delayed responses, or warnings from support. On some platforms an expert advisor that updates the stop on every tick will quickly hit the limit.

Besides the technical cap, there's a practical cost. Every modification is a request over the network, and during fast markets those requests queue up. Stops end up lagging behind the price by exactly the amount that matters.

A cleaner approach is to modify only when price has moved by a meaningful threshold, say half the average range of the trade. That cuts requests drastically and doesn't change results much.

For manual traders, the equivalent is dragging stops every few seconds. It rarely improves outcomes.
