Superstition in setups: rituals that feel like edge

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Short-term trading generates superstition easily. A trade works after a certain sound, a lucky pen, a particular time of day, or a favorite pattern. The brain links outcomes with whatever happened nearby.

Some rituals are harmless. Others alter behavior in costly ways: avoiding perfectly good trades on an unlucky day, insisting on a pair because it "likes" the strategy, or sizing up after a coincidence.

The remedy is testing claims like any other hypothesis. If a trader believes Tuesdays are bad, split the log by weekday and look at the numbers with confidence intervals. Most superstitions dissolve when examined with enough data.

Some beliefs turn out to have a basis: certain hours do perform differently. In that case, the superstition becomes a rule backed by evidence.

Keep a list of beliefs about the market and about personal performance. Mark each as tested or untested. Treat the untested ones as unproven until the data speaks.

What beliefs about timing or setups have been tested against the log, and which survived?
