Diversifying across brokers without doubling the problems

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Using multiple brokers spreads counterparty risk and allows execution comparison. It also adds complexity: separate platforms, margin to manage, and reconciliation.

Benefits include redundancy if one broker has an outage, the ability to route trades to the broker with better conditions for a given pair or time, and protection against account-specific restrictions.

Costs include split capital, which lowers margin efficiency, and duplicate monitoring effort. Strategies that rely on correlated signals can drift if platforms receive different prices.

If the same strategy runs on both, differences in fills and feeds create inconsistent results. Understanding them can reveal which broker offers better execution.

A practical approach uses the primary broker for most activity and a secondary for backup and testing. Periodically compare the quality, and shift volume if there is a persistent difference.

Keep a clear record of the capital at each broker. Withdrawal practices and funding conditions vary, and having funds in several places complicates risk management.

How is capital allocated across brokers, and what drives the split?
