When a 0.8 pip winner feels like a loss

A scalp targeting 3 pips closes at 0.8 after a quick reversal. The result is positive. It doesn't feel that way.

The mind compares the outcome with the plan, not with zero. A gain of 0.8 against an expected 3 registers as a shortfall. The emotional accounting treats it as a partial loss.

That sentiment is a trap. Small wins are the bread and butter of the strategy, and the average outcome includes many of them. An emotional reaction against them leads to attempts to squeeze more, holding trades longer, and turning small wins into losses.

The comparison that matters is with the distribution of outcomes. If the strategy's average trade is 1.1 pips, a 0.8 is in line. The expected value of each trade comes from the whole set, not from the target.

Tracking the distribution visually, with a histogram of results, helps. Seeing where each trade falls relative to the typical range normalizes the small ones.

It's also worth asking whether a 3 pip target is realistic, if the average trade rarely gets there.

Trades closing far below target: how often, and what does the exit distribution look like?
