FOMC minutes and the quiet release that sometimes moves everything

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Three weeks after each meeting, the Fed publishes minutes. The release is scheduled at 2:00 PM Eastern, and it lacks the drama of the decision itself. Yet the contents can shift expectations, especially if they reveal more disagreement or a different tone than the statement.

The reaction can be sharp and fast, followed by a slower digestion as analysts parse the text. Algorithms scan for keywords within milliseconds, pushing price before humans can read.

For scalpers, the moment resembles other scheduled events: wide spreads, slippage, and unreliable first moves. But because it is less hyped, some traders underestimate the risk and keep trading through it.

A look at the history of reactions to minutes shows that the move is often smaller than on decision days, but not negligible. The tail events matter.

Add it to the calendar as a risk event, and plan to stand aside or reduce size. After the first reaction, wait for the spread to normalize before resuming.

How large are the typical moves after FOMC minutes compared with other releases?
